Ingredients

  • 1 block extra firm tofu (15 ounces)
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil or grapeseed oil

Equipment

  • Cutting Board
  • Sharp Knife
  • Heavy skillet or frying pan
  • Spatula
  • Paper towels

Method

  1. Start by removing the tofu from its packaging. Wrap the block of tofu in paper towels, then place it on a plate. To press the tofu, place another plate on top of it, followed by something heavy (like a can or a skillet). Let it sit for about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Once the tofu is pressed, unwrap it and cut it into your desired shape (cubes, rectangles, or triangles).
  3. In your skillet, add 3 tablespoons of canola oil or grapeseed oil. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it shimmers.
  4. Carefully place the tofu pieces in the hot skillet, ensuring they are not crowded. Allow the tofu to cook undisturbed for about 5-7 minutes until the bottoms are golden and crispy.
  5. Using your spatula, gently flip each piece of tofu. Allow the other side to cook for an additional 5-7 minutes or until it reaches your desired level of crispiness.
  6. Once the tofu is perfectly browned on both sides, remove it from the skillet and place it on a plate lined with paper towels.

Notes

  • Consider marinating the tofu for 30 minutes before pressing for added flavor.
  • Add seasonings directly to the oil while cooking for extra flavor.
  • Allow the tofu to brown nicely for the best flavor and texture.
  • Experiment with different cooking oils for varied flavors.
