Cuisine: Korean

Ingredients

For the Marinade:
  • 1 Fuji apple cored and peeled
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • ½ cup sesame oil
  • 3 tablespoons plum extract optional
For the Beef:
  • 1 yellow onion peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 pounds ribeye steak thinly sliced

Equipment

  • Blender or food processor
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Grill pan or skillet
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Sharp knife and cutting board

Method

Preparation Steps:
  1. Start by blending the peeled Fuji apple, garlic cloves, soy sauce, light brown sugar, granulated sugar, sesame oil, and plum extract in a blender or food processor until smooth.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the thinly sliced ribeye steak with the marinade. Make sure all the pieces are well-coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or ideally up to 4 hours.
  3. While your beef is marinating, slice the yellow onion thinly.
  4. Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef along with the onions, cooking until the beef is browned and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Once cooked, remove the bulgogi from the heat and serve it hot.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, marinate the beef overnight if you have the time.
  • Choose high-quality ribeye steak for tenderness and flavor.
  • Make sure your pan is hot enough before adding the beef to achieve a nice sear.
  • Feel free to adjust the sweetness of the marinade by varying the amount of brown and granulated sugar.
