Ingredients

For the Fries:
  • 4 cups frozen French fries Choose your favorite brand; crinkle-cut, shoestring, or steak fries all work well!
For the Cheese Sauce:
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter This adds richness to the cheese sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour This will help thicken the cheese sauce.
  • 1/2 cup whole milk For a creamy texture.
  • 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese Feel free to use sharp cheddar for an extra kick!

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Medium Saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Baking Sheet
  • Spatula

Method

Stepwise Method:
  1. Preheat your oven according to the instructions on the frozen French fries package. Spread the 4 cups of frozen fries evenly on a baking sheet. Bake them until they are golden brown and crisp, usually around 20-25 minutes.
  2. While the fries are baking, it’s time to prepare the cheese sauce. In a medium saucepan, melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour. Stir continuously for about 1 minute to create a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in 1/2 cup of whole milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, which should take about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and stir in 3/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Keep stirring until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a splash more milk to reach your desired consistency.
  5. Once the fries are done baking, remove them from the oven and drizzle the cheese sauce generously over the top. Serve immediately, garnishing with your favorite toppings if desired!

Notes

  • Store any leftover cheese fries in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat in the oven to restore some of the crispiness.
  • Add toppings like crispy bacon bits or jalapeños for extra flavor!
