Step-by-Step Guide
  1. Step 1: Prepare the Caramel - In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1/4 cup of water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves, then allow it to boil without stirring. Watch closely as it turns a golden amber color, which should take about 8-10 minutes. Once it reaches the desired color, quickly pour the caramel into the bottom of your 9-inch round cake pan, swirling it around to coat the bottom evenly.
  2. Step 2: Mix the Custard - In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs, one 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk, one 12-ounce can of evaporated milk, and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract. Continue whisking until the mixture is well combined and smooth.
  3. Step 3: Pour the Custard Over the Caramel - Carefully pour the custard mixture over the set caramel in the cake pan. Be gentle to avoid disturbing the caramel layer.
  4. Step 4: Create a Water Bath - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the filled cake pan in a larger baking dish and fill the outer dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the cake pan. This water bath will help cook the flan evenly and prevent it from cracking.
