Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (6.75 oz)
  • 1/2 cup mini semisweet chocolate chips (plus more for topping)

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula
  • Baking Pan (9x9 inches)
  • Parchment paper

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) for even baking.
  2. Grease your 9x9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  3. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, mixing until well combined.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour and salt, then gradually add to the wet ingredients.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips, reserving some for topping.
  7. Spread the batter evenly in the pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until edges are golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and cool completely before cutting.

Notes

  • For a sweet and salty twist, sprinkle sea salt on top before baking.
  • Don’t overmix after adding flour to keep bars tender.
  • Allow bars to cool completely before cutting for cleaner slices.
