Ingredients

  • 3.5 tablespoons whole milk
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/16 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon sugar
  • 2 slices Texas toast or crustless bread
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Equipment

  • Frying pan or skillet
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Plate or cooling rack

Method

Instructions
  1. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the whole milk, egg yolks, all-purpose flour, salt, ground nutmeg, and cinnamon sugar until well combined.
  2. Cut your Texas toast or crustless bread into thick strips, about 1-2 inches wide.
  3. In a frying pan, pour in enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom of the pan. Heat the oil over medium heat until it shimmers.
  4. Take each strip of bread and dip it into the custard mixture, ensuring that both sides are well-coated.
  5. Carefully place the coated bread strips into the hot oil. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  6. Once golden brown, use a spatula to remove the French toast sticks from the oil and drain on paper towels or a cooling rack.

Notes

  • Use gluten-free bread and flour for a gluten-free version.
